The approach
What needs attention?
What happens next?
Assessment, remediation, migration, and evidence connect the work of understanding an environment to demonstrating that its controls still hold.
Assessment
What needs attention?
Start with the systems you are accountable for and the requirements that apply to them. Evaluate evidence against the control intent, not merely the presence of a configuration.
- Define the system boundary and shared responsibilities.
- Map applicable requirements to a shared control catalog.
- Keep unknown or incomplete evidence visible.
Remediation
Who needs to act?
A finding needs an owner, a reason to prioritize it, and a verifiable outcome. Separate observation from authorization to change the environment.
- Prioritize by exposure, consequence, and control importance.
- Use explicitly approved changes and validate the result.
- Govern exceptions with an owner, justification, and expiry.
Migration
Will our controls survive the move?
Treat a migration as a change to the control boundary. Translate requirements into the target environment and validate them before and after the move.
- Understand what is inherited and what remains yours.
- Map source controls to target capabilities.
- Retain evidence of the transition and its decisions.
Evidence
Can we demonstrate what’s working?
Maintain evidence as a structured record linked to the systems, controls, and decisions it supports. Reuse it where mappings and assessor expectations justify it.
- Track provenance, scope, freshness, and limitations.
- Share a consistent evidence base across applicable frameworks.
- Design for machine-readable exchange, including OSCAL.
Automation has a boundary.
Technical controls can often be evaluated automatically. Administrative controls still need human processes and evidence. A credible program makes that distinction explicit.
Start with one system. Prove the approach.
